No government dataset tracks plumbing business owner pay. The closest measure is sale data: plumbing companies sold on BizBuySell from 2021 to 2025 had median owner earnings of $311,598 on $1.17 million in revenue.
That figure is seller’s discretionary earnings (SDE), which counts the owner’s salary plus the profit, before income tax, loan payments, and new trucks. It describes companies big enough to sell. A one-truck owner usually earns far less.
All figures below were checked on September 30, 2026, and each one names its source and what it measures.
Key takeaways
- Plumbing businesses sold on BizBuySell from 2021 to 2025 had median owner earnings (SDE) of $311,598, with half between $176,702 and $545,500.
- In 2025 alone the median sold plumbing business earned its owner $278,498 in SDE on $1,044,630 in revenue, a 26.7 percent share.
- Housecall Pro puts typical owner pay at $70,000 to $120,000 and solo owners at $40,000 to $70,000, without naming a dataset.
- Employed plumbers earn a median $63,800, and the top 10 percent earn more than $108,420 (BLS, May 2025 data).

How much does a plumbing business owner make in 2026?
The owner of a plumbing company that sells typically earns about $311,598 a year in SDE, the median for plumbing businesses sold on BizBuySell from 2021 to 2025. The middle half of those owners earned $176,702 to $545,500.
The average was higher, $450,165. BizBuySell notes that averages run above medians because a minority of high-value businesses pull them up, so the median is the better guide for a typical company.
The most recent year was lower. In 2025 the median sold plumbing business reported $278,498 in owner earnings on $1,044,630 in revenue.
Revenue fell 29 percent from the 2024 peak, per BizBuySell, while the earnings share rose to 26.7 percent, the highest of the five years.
Don’t read that number as a paycheck. SDE is a buyer’s measure of everything the business produces for one owner, and it only covers companies that reached a sale.
Why do plumbing owner pay figures disagree so much?
They measure different things. Sale data captures the full cash a business throws off for its owner, owner guides estimate what owners pay themselves, and job boards track wages at plumbing companies. Side by side, they differ by a factor of five.
What does SDE include?
BizBuySell defines SDE as net profit before taxes, with the owner’s salary and perks added back, along with interest, depreciation, amortization, and one-time or discretionary expenses.
So an owner with $311,598 in SDE still pays income tax on it, services any loans, and replaces vans and equipment out of the same money.
Why does sale data run high?
Businesses that sell tend to be larger and steadier than the typical shop. The median sold plumbing company had $1.17 million in revenue.
BLS counts 8 percent of the 510,600 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters as self-employed, roughly 40,800 people. Many of them run a single truck and would never show up in sale data.
What do owner guides and job boards say?
Housecall Pro’s 2026 guide says owners typically earn $70,000 to $120,000, with solo owners at $40,000 to $70,000 and established multi-employee companies at $80,000 to $150,000 or more. It credits BLS and trade reports but names no dataset for those ranges.
ZipRecruiter does not publish a plumbing owner salary page that we could find. Its “Plumbing Business” page shows an average of $63,215 a year as of September 30, 2026, built from job postings and third-party data.
That is almost exactly the BLS plumber median, so it reflects employee wages.
How have plumbing owner earnings changed since 2021?
Median owner earnings for sold plumbing businesses swung between $244,625 and $340,028 from 2021 to 2025, while the earnings share of revenue stayed between 21.0 and 26.7 percent.
| Year of sale | Median revenue | Median owner earnings (SDE) | SDE as share of revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $1,189,222 | $312,893 | 26.3% |
| 2022 | $1,099,844 | $244,625 | 22.2% |
| 2023 | $1,339,822 | $340,028 | 25.4% |
| 2024 | $1,463,103 | $306,610 | 21.0% |
| 2025 | $1,044,630 | $278,498 | 26.7% |
Source: BizBuySell, median reported financials of plumbing companies sold, retrieved September 30, 2026.
Sale prices moved more than earnings. The median plumbing business sold for $572,500 in 2022 and $837,500 in 2025, a 46 percent rise, while BizBuySell describes 2025 owner earnings as roughly flat against the five-year average.
The yearly swings look big, but the share barely moves. Across the five years, SDE averaged about a quarter of revenue for sold plumbing companies, so a quarter of revenue is a fair first guess at SDE for a company that size.
How much do plumbing owners keep at different company sizes?
Every source here ties owner pay to company size. ShiftFlow’s August 2026 planning model shows how the numbers move at three sizes. Its authors call these hypothetical scenarios rather than survey results.
| ShiftFlow scenario | Collected revenue | Paid technicians | Modeled owner pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner-operator (576 calls at $450) | $259,200 | 0 | $107,827 |
| Small service team (1,440 calls at $525) | $756,000 | 2 | $146,244 |
| Established team (3,600 calls at $575) | $2,070,000 | Multiple | $276,660 |
Source: ShiftFlow, “How Much Do Plumbing Business Owners Make?”, August 25, 2026, retrieved September 30, 2026. Modeled owner pay is before personal tax.
The pattern matches the sale data. Owner pay grows with revenue, but more slowly than revenue does. In the model, the solo owner keeps a much larger slice of each dollar and also works 120 field hours a month.
The established owner works no field hours, and the extra money pays for technicians, trucks, and office staff. Our guide on how to start a plumbing business covers the costs of that first step.
What profit margin does a plumbing company make?
Incorporated plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors posted a 5.7 percent aggregate net margin in IRS Statistics of Income corporate returns for tax year 2022, per VantaInsights’ analysis of NAICS code 238220, updated September 9, 2026.
That margin comes after officers’ pay, because corporations deduct owner salaries as an expense. On the median sold company’s $1,174,514 in revenue, 5.7 percent is about $67,000 left over after the owner is paid.
Housecall Pro’s guide calls a 20 percent net margin a strong benchmark and suggests owners pay themselves 30 to 50 percent of net profit. On $1 million in revenue at 20 percent, that rule gives the owner $60,000 to $100,000 from profit.
That is a big gap. A shop at the IRS average leaves little for distributions, while one at 20 percent can fund growth and a good owner draw. Pricing is often the difference.
Plumbing owner versus plumber: who earns more?
Owners of sellable plumbing companies earn far more than employed plumbers. Employed plumbers earned a median of $63,800 in May 2025, or $30.67 an hour, and the top 10 percent earned more than $108,420 (BLS).
The lower quartile of sold plumbing businesses produced $176,702 in SDE, well above the top plumber wage band.
That comparison flatters owners, for two reasons. SDE is pre-tax and pre-debt, and it leaves out the many small shops that never sell. Housecall Pro’s $40,000 to $70,000 solo range sits at or below the BLS median wage.
A fair reading: a solo owner often earns about what a good employee does, with more risk and more hours.
The money shows up once the company employs other plumbers and runs without the owner on every call. Our plumber salary guide breaks down employee pay by state and license level.
Do plumbing owners earn more than HVAC and electrical owners?
Plumbing owners earn about the same as HVAC owners on sale data. Sold plumbing businesses had median owner earnings of $311,598, against $304,309 for HVAC businesses and $385,902 for electrical and mechanical contractors, all sold from 2021 to 2025.
| Business type (sold 2021 to 2025) | Median revenue | Median owner earnings | Median sale price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | $1,174,514 | $311,598 | $638,730 |
| HVAC | $1,482,016 | $304,309 | $750,000 |
| Electrical and mechanical contracting | $1,724,323 | $385,902 | $950,000 |
| All construction businesses | $1,509,665 | $323,174 | $750,000 |
Source: BizBuySell, Building and Construction Related Business Valuation Benchmarks, on the plumbing benchmarks page, retrieved September 30, 2026.
Plumbing companies earn about as much as HVAC companies on less revenue, so their earnings share is higher.
Buyers pay a little less per dollar of plumbing earnings: sold plumbing businesses averaged 2.49 times SDE, against 2.75 for HVAC and 2.66 for electrical and mechanical contractors. BizBuySell links that gap to plumbing companies’ smaller revenue.
For how HVAC owners are paid by company size, see our HVAC business owner salary guide.
How can plumbing owners raise their take-home pay?
Plumbing owners raise take-home pay fastest through margin. On $1 million in revenue, each extra point of net margin is $10,000 more profit, with no new trucks or hires. Three levers do most of the work:
- price every job to cover overhead
- get paid faster
- stop doing unpaid office work
Price to cover overhead
The gap between a 5.7 percent margin and a 20 percent margin is mostly pricing. A price book with current parts costs keeps technicians from quoting from memory. Our roundup of plumbing estimate apps compares the tools that build one.

Plumbing business owner salary FAQ
How much do plumbers make if they own their own business?
It depends on size. Owners of plumbing companies sold on BizBuySell from 2021 to 2025 earned a median $311,598 in SDE. Housecall Pro estimates solo owners at $40,000 to $70,000 and typical owners at $70,000 to $120,000, without citing a dataset.
Can a plumbing business owner make $200,000 a year?
Sale data says yes for companies near $1 million in revenue. The 2025 median sold plumbing business produced $278,498 in SDE on $1,044,630 in revenue. Taxes, debt, and equipment come out of that before the owner’s take-home.
Is owning a plumbing business worth it?
For owners who grow past one truck, the numbers favor it. Even lower-quartile sold businesses produced $176,702 in SDE, against $108,420 for a top-10-percent employed plumber. A solo owner earning $40,000 to $70,000 (Housecall Pro) may do better as an employee.
Can a plumber become a millionaire?
The clearest route is building a company and selling it. The median plumbing business sold on BizBuySell went for $837,500 in 2025, and sold plumbing businesses traded at 1.66 to 3.15 times SDE for the middle half of deals from 2021 to 2025.
How much should a plumbing business owner pay themselves?
Housecall Pro suggests 30 to 50 percent of net profit, leaving the rest for taxes, reinvestment, and cash reserves.
How we compiled this guide
The author is a software reviewer who covers the trades and has never owned a plumbing company, so nothing here is first-hand income data. This is desk research.
Every figure was checked against its source on September 30, 2026, and the source and date are stated next to each number.
BizBuySell’s sale data is the core source because it is the largest public dataset of plumbing owner earnings we found. BLS covers employee pay and IRS data (via VantaInsights) covers corporate margins. Housecall Pro’s ranges and ShiftFlow’s model are reported with their limits stated.
